In the video released Thursday, the 50-year-old singer appears a step slower than he was in his twenties and thirties, but he is in good voice as he works through the song "They Don't Really Care About Us.
Jackson interacts with a female lead guitarist and several backup dancers, before breaking into a "Thriller"-type choreographed march with them at the song's end.
At the end of the short clip, a director offstage says "Hold for applause, hold for applause... fade out."
A photographer who was there during the rehearsal also said Jackson looked like his old self.
"When he hit the stage at rehearsal, I was thrilled that the magical Michael Jackson was back," the photographer who took Jackson's final performance photos, Kevin Mazur, told the New York Post. "I felt the same adrenaline rush as when I photographed him the first time moonwalking."
Jackson died two days after this video was shot of apparent heart failure. The official coroner's report determining the official cause of death is still pending.
